Book Review: The Dragon's Call

The Dragon's Call written by K.W. Mc Cabe is a romantic fantasy focusing on the young lives of Derek, Cecily and her battle born father.  Cecily discovers a forbidden love while uncovering the hidden truth about herself.  Issues of inequality permeate a post war dragon run world while the fact that humans are disappearing after curfew remains in hushed whispers.

     Todd was born in the year of the dragon, anno draconis.  Human weaponry awoke dragons from their sleep thus began the war.  Todd relives his memories fighting the dragons with their best weapons.  He lives with PTSD and his isolation from society became severe after his wife is snatched seconds after curfew while he and his daughter are watching from inside the house.

     Cecily is a teenager who is surprised to find a dragon attending her class because in the dragon run world dragons and humans are segragated.  Dragons live in luxury of the dragon enclave while humans live in the delapidated neighborhood.  Don't smile....don't look.  Cecily tries to act on what her father told her about dragons.  Looking at a dragon in human form means falling under their spell.

    Derek born in luxury for his mother is the queen dragon.  He has an antagonistic relationship with his half brother and his rebellious nature leads him to seek the human enclave.  Both Derek and Cecily develop an inexplicable fondness for one another.  Aknowledging their forbidden love is dangerous.  Discussions about humans disappearing after curfew make Cecily wonder if she can really trust this dragon?

Book Review: Freelance Writing by Christine Rice

Freelance Writing; What To Expect In Your First Year As A Freelance Writer written by Christine Rice.  Ever wonder what it takes to become a freelance writer?  Christine Rice describes the steps from building a portfolio to ghostwriting. I am thrilled to be writing this book review.

When you embark on becoming a freelance writer you become your own boss.  Your goals include building a portfolio, polishing a resume.  Christine discusses online  publishing sites for your first articles.  Job search, free college courses and SEO  to make your writing more competitive and are discussed in this book.

Would I recommend this book?  Yes.  I learned many things including electronic signatures which include your URL and any contact information.  You might post your electronic signature in an email or forum post.  I would like to add that my blogging skills have improved since I have read Christine's book and I have increased pages views on my blog.  In Chapter Six the authoress explains that your blog is a way to market your writing  and how people will know you so get out there and write your blog at least once a week, but daily is better.  In chapter sixteen  she discusses the proper use of tags so readers can find your blog.

I asked Christine one question.  What is next in your writing goals?

My next writing goals for book writing are to publish Chronicles of a Troubled Girl in November 2012, Articles for the Mind in December 2012, and Freedom from Fat in May 2013.

Chronicles is a compilation of all of my journal entries from age 9 to age 30. At the moment I have one journal left to type up and then I will be finished with the first draft. It is really exciting, but I probably won't be able to continue working on it until after the end of the Freelance Writing Guide blog tour, which ends September 25th.

Articles will be a compilation of all the articles I published online as a freelance writer in 2011 (I will have gained back the rights to them all in December 2012, which is why I intend to publish the book that month). It fits into the same title theme as Poetry for the Heart and Essays for the Soul.

Freedom is a compilation of journal entries and blog posts during the most recent years of my weight loss journey. It will cover my dieting and exercising experiences from 2010-2013, which is a time when I have kept continuous track of my weight loss experiences. I plan to reach my goal weight by May 2013, which is when I will be publishing the book. Although, my true weight loss journey began in 2000, so I have a lot of knowledge and experience to share.

I also would like to write another book in the "Freelance Writing Guide" series. The next book might be about what can be expected during the second year of a freelance writing career :)

Besides the books I'm writing and publishing, I hope to increase my client base for my editing services, take on more ghostwriting assignments, and branch out to do client-based ghostwriting. I plan to continue writing book reviews and blogging.

Book Review: Angel of Death by K.W. Mc Cabe

Angel of Death written by K.W. Mc Cabe is a fun ebook for my kindle which I couldn't stop reading until I finished it. Here is my book review.

Poor Death, a reaper's work is never done. Ever heard of the phrase?  Who felt sorry for the Grim Reaper?  The authoress has pulled the robed wonder out of the shadows and sculpted him with words.
Meet Thomas, also known as Death the ruler of the underworld.  Two thousand years grew too long to hate the decor and too long to work at the same job.  He met a woman who sparked desire in a way that he didn't feel for as long as he served as a reaper.  The daily grind of having collected so many corrupted souls made him want to scream for retirement.  His only hope would be to find his successor with a pure heart.

I liked the way the authoress has woven romance with the supernatural and humor within this taut drama.  Funny moments happened when Thomas came to the land of the living after two thousands years and experienced culture shock.  He thought monsters roam the streets and he nearly got sent to the psyche ward while roaming the hospital.  He met Sarah who was diagnosed with leukemia.  She was surprised when she had feelings for him.

I highly recommend this book because it encourages one to stop and think. Look around you. What could you learn if you could see your environment in a different light?
The authoress carefully left clues to a greater truth: there is hope in darkness and the enduring power of love.

Funny moments happened when Thomas came to the land of the living after two thousands years and experienced culture shock. He thought monsters roam the streets and he nearly got sent to the psyche ward while roaming the hospital. He met Sarah who was diagnosed with leukemia. She was surprised she had feelings for the Lord of Death.

I highly recommend this book. Remember the power of love...

Today's special is a two for one book review. I found both of these gems yesterday on smashwords.com . I downloaded both for my kindle for free!

Ariari's Staircase App written by Hiroshi Makise is a modern day fable for children. The cute cover shows a fine example of the illustrator's style which displays well on my kindle. Each page is well illustrated and advances the plot forward. Ariari appears as a funny face individual who spies on Ana while she plays with her tablet. She races a rabbit by walking with her fingers on touchscreen tablet. Ariari uses Ana's touch screen to open a portal in the staircase app. I would highly recommend reading this ebook with your children.

Tell Me A Thousand Times written by Petar Toushkov is dark poetic short story with elements of horror. True horror comes from treating people as a commodity. The main character is nameless with a deformed soul who never ages. In this dystopian nightmare clones are mass produced to be used as soldiers to die in battle. The story is vague. There are no names or any clear description which underscores the mind numbing feeling that the main character endures and this makes a haunting story. It is a quick read and I highly recommend this ebook. This story feels like a la ronde where the end feels like a beginning which makes it a seductive writing technique.

Book Review: Planet Pouch Simple Juice Pouch Bags Anyone Can Make A Make It Today Craft Book written Brook Jones. I downloaded this book into my kindle because I always wanted to make one out of juice pouches, but I hesitated because I wasn't sure how to make it. Brook Jones's step by step photos are excellent because they display well on my kindle. The zoom covers all of the screen in high resolution. The book covers the making of three bags: Wave, the Grabber and the Kangaroo. Photos detail preparing the juice pouch to sewing the panels together. The bags are complete with handles and name tags. The Wave is a large bag that can carry groceries or beach gear. The grabber holds lunch. The Kangaroo is a back-to-school portfolio that holds oversized papers. Book Review: The Evolution of Fashion vs. Dress Design

It's 5 a.m. You wake up and decide to write a historical novel or scifi/ fantasy novel set in a different world. What are your characters going to wear? If you watch Buck Rogers (TV series) and wonder where does princess Ardala get her horn headdress? Where the sisters of Paul Atreide's mom get their steeple hats in the movie "Dune"? What is the source of such fashion?

You can these strange fashions in the ebook "Evolution of Fashion" written by Florence Mary Gardiner in 1897. She writes a delightful book with illustrations, sharp wit and sprinkles it with poetry. You can download this book (many forms including Kindle)from Project Gutenberg for free! The middle ages contains a panorama of extreme fashions which includes steeple and horny hats for women, long pointy shoes. I draw this example of a long shoe that lifts the toes with a long chain that attaches around the calf. Fathom a room full of guests in such attire. Ahhh...It's not time travel, but the next best thing.

"Dress Design" written by Talbot Hughes is available for download (free) at the Gutenberg Project. This author includes beautiful photos of real women wearing historical clothing. The author writes with fashion designers in his mind by including drawings of patterns for clothing. Beauty is the embroidery that flourishes on crisp fabrics that have endured through time. The book covers clothing from 500 A.D. to 1875.

Which one should you download? Both! Both are free. Florence Mary Gardiner gives a more touching account about humanity with bridal and funeral customs in different countries. Both authors despise the chignon hairstyle! Wow! Really? I googled the chignon hairstyle: a roll of hair bunched at the neck....hmm...
